On numerous trips to Camden, N.J., to work on the TLP book, Nick Virgilio: A Life in Haiku, Rick Black snapped pix of the area and has turned them into digital paintings, each one accompanied by a different Virgilio haiku.
These haiga – a Japanese term that means the combination of images and haiku – have been made over the past two years but only now are being released to the public. Choose from one of five images about lilies, bridges, walking, baseball and diners. More images will be made available throughout the coming year. In addition, we are working on a limited edition of a series of black and white prints based on Virgilio’s poems about the death of his youngest brother, Larry, in the Vietnam war.
Virgilio, who started writing in the 1960s and was a pioneer of American haiku poetry, penned some of this country’s most elegiac and memorable haiku. Born and bred in Camden, New Jersey, he spent countless hours in his cellar at his Remington typewriter, writing about nature, the people of Camden, and his family.
By combining Virgilio’s poems with images of the city where he lived, the images are made even more memorable. We hope you’ll enjoy them.
