Our Story

Our company, Turtle Light Press, was founded in 2005 by Rick Black, a former reporter in the Jerusalem bureau of The New York Times.

“By chance, I was walking down 27th Street in New York City when I noticed a big banner, “Center for Book Arts,” says Rick. “I went upstairs and discovered another world of beautifully crafted, handmade artist books and broadsheets.”

As he browsed informally at the center’s Vandercook proof printers and book presses, he decided that he wanted to learn how to make handmade artist books himself, thus combining his love of words and images with a longtime desire to work with his hands. He now specializes in particular in Hebrew and Jewish-themed artist books.

What began as a love affair of handmade artist books has now expanded into a successful artistic venture including handmade and trade poetry titles and portrait photographs of Arlington VA and Falls Church VA for businesses and homeowners. These images are available in a variety of formats, including prints, web page images, books, and notecards.
